The topics we discuss aren’t normally talked about in ‘polite’ society. But what’s polite about ignoring topics that deeply affect people on a daily basis?
If people talked more openly about sexual orientation and gender identity, they would realize just how fluid and dynamic they can be. This could help lessen the violence and hate that stems from ignorance. It could help people under the LGBTQ umbrella live happier lives, or just plain live as suicide attempts for LGBTQ people are so much higher than the general populace.
If people talked more openly about sexuality and gender roles they would realize just how one-sided this view currently is in America’s media. This could help people realize that the opposite gender (mostly women) are people and not objects. It could help lessen incidents of sexual harassment and assault.
If people talked more openly about the privileges enjoyed by certain segments of the population, they would realize there are still marginalized groups fighting for equality. This could help give a voice to those without those same privileges and further our journey towards true equality.
If people talked more openly about talking more openly they would realize that other people think about ‘weird stuff’ just as much as they do. This could help everybody realize that there is no ‘normal’ and that honest communication can lessen all sorts of issues in relationships and life.
This is why we are so passionate about these topics and the opportunities we have to expose people to other viewpoints. It doesn’t mean you have to change your viewpoint, as long as you recognize that other viewpoints deserve respect.
